The Reef & Rainforest Coast, a spectacular 200 kilometre sweep of coastline along the shores of the Coral Sea, has become a magnetic destination for travellers of all ages. The twin drawcards are the World Heritage listed ecosystems existing side by side - the magnificent underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef and the lush tropical rainforests of the region known chiefly as the Daintree.

As you'll hear many times, the route to Port Douglas is a very scenic one. Highlights include the Rex Lookout, Hartley's Creek Crocodile Farm, Oak Beach, Thala Beach Lodge and Mowbray Valley with its welcoming Bed and Breakfasts and artist's gallery.

Port Douglas sits on an isthmus beside the sparkling waters of Dickinson Inlet and the rolling waves of the Coral Sea. Overlooking 'Port', as everyone calls it, is Flagstaff Hill, which is the best place to capture the striking views of the town and its superb Four Mile Beach.  From the Marina Mirage, all kinds of reef trips leave daily to Low Isles, Agincourt Reef and other spectacular sites.

Port Douglas has much to offer, stroll among the village shops, galleries and historic buildings or browse in the seaside Sunday markets. Bring your clubs and play a round at one of the resort courses. Take the Bally Hooley train from the marina to the award winning Rainforest Habitat and learn about the indigenous fauna.

The Daintree

Where rainforest meets the reef

DaintreeThe township of Daintree, perched on a bend of the Daintree River, is just further on from the turn off to the Daintree Ferry.  Wildlife of every kind flourishes on the Daintree River and its banks. The area's most infamous inhabitants are the estuarine crocodiles. The only cable ferry in tropical Australia, the Daintree Ferry provides the southern access into the lowland Daintree Rainforest. It's a vehicle ferry operating from 6am to midnight each day. Regional accommodation includes Bed and Breakfasts and homestays, while further north there are a few secluded resorts.

Across the river, pause at the lookout at the top of Alexandra Range for orientation before descending into Cow Bay, visit FloraVilla Art Gallery to see the superb arts and crafts produced by the rainforest dwelling locals, hike along the beaches or better still, go horseriding.

Coopers Creek is a wilderness area where locals offer terrific day and night guided interpretive walks as well as mangrove discovery/croc search tours by boat. Above Coopers Creek is a coastal range (Thornton's Peak), thriving on the climate is the tasty tea grown in neatly clipped acres at the nearby Daintree Tea Plantation.

Captain Cook named Cape Tribulation after the trials of becoming grounded here.  The youth of the world stay at the amiable backpacker lodges.  Activities on offer include guided rainforest walks, four wheel drive safaris taking in local features, waterfalls, swimming holes, reef trips, mangrove and crocodile watching tours, ocean kayaking and horse trekking.
