Cairns

Gateway to tropical North

The city of Cairns is framed by the spectacular backdrop of the rainforest mountain ranges and fringed by the sparkling Coral Sea.   The friendly climate almost dictates a leisurely, outdoor-focused lifestyle.

Cairns has been called the safest tropical city in the world and the sense of freedom and choice is evident in the lifestyle that characterizes the city.  Cairns is Queensland's most northerly city, although relatively young, it is a place rich in history and colourful folklore.

The central business district begins at the cosmopolitan Esplanade with its street cafes and balmy promenade.  The waterfront is the departure point for many reef and fishing tours.

There are a number of Markets held in Cairns where you'll discover an incredible world of arts, crafts and ‘true blue' Australian souvenirs. The Central Business District's shops and duty free stores are well stocked with souvenirs and luxury goods from top Australian and overseas designers. There are a number of large shopping complexes to choose from which offer a mix of local retailers and high quality national stores.

Today, as well as a high profile tourism industry, sugar cane, ship building and fishing are the mainstays of the local economy.

Cairns Highlands

Cairns'The Tablelands', as they are always called by the locals, are cool, tropical highlands less than an hour's drive from Cairns City. Set on rolling plateaux, at an average of 700 metres above sea level, the Tablelands are a true mountain retreat; refreshing, invigorating, climatically perfect, with a superb range of natural and developed attractions.

At the top of the Gillies Range, is Lake Barrine. Take a cruise on the lake and a Devonshire tea before you set out again. Nearby is the Lake Eacham National Park. As with Lake Barrine, Lake Eacham is a volcanic crater lake full of crystal clear water and surrounded by lush tropical highland rainforest.

Just down the road is the heritage village of Yungaburra, with  its central location to the crater lakes and Lake Tinaroo make it the ideal focal point for any visitor. The village of Yungaburra has existed largely unchanged since 1910, with many of the original buildings still remaining. Yungaburra has an undeniable country charm with several art and craft galleries and displays, restaurants, and a wide variety of accommodation.

Just minutes from Yungaburra is the famous Curtain Fig Tree. Standing 50 metres tall and spreading to 39 metres wide at the base, the tree is over 800 years old.

The highway continues to the town of Millaa Millaa and the spectacular Millaa Millaa Lookout, giving you a sensational 180 degree view of the Tablelands. On a clear day you can glimpse the ocean. When you leave Millaa Millaa you'll see the Waterfall Circuit drive which is a nine kilometre experience of picturesque rainforest, waterfalls and cascading rivers.
